When NFL Hall of Famer and Tennessee legend Eddie George was introduced as the new head football coach of the Tennessee State Tigers he admitted that the opportunity was unexpected and that he would lean and learn from the experience of his assistants.

George and athletic director Dr. Mikki Allen put together an all-star caliber around George. Six members of the TSU coaching staff have experience either as players or as coaches. Receivers coach Kenan Smith and tight ends coach Corey Harkey were Bill Walsh fellows in the NFL.

During Hugh Jackson’s coaching career, he helped recruit Carson Palmer to USC while a college assistant and coached the likes of Chad Johnson, Stephen Davis, Joe Flacco, and Darren McFadden.

Offensive line coach Mark Hutson played for the Dallas Cowboys and was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma and part of the Sooners’ 1985 National Championship team. George’s former head coach, Jeff Fisher will also serve as a non-official special counsel for George.

Time will tell if this experiment will work since this has never been attempted. George’s cache in Nashville should help to recruit the greater Nashville high school scene.

George takes for Rod Reed who was 55-55 in ten seasons at TSU. Reed led the Tigers to a 10-4 season in 2014, but the program suffered consecutive losing seasons.

Year one under George should be interesting.
