Purdue needs an option other than David Bell.

In both 2018 and 2019, the Boilermakers’ offense was David Bell or bust too often. Rondale Moore was injured most of both seasons. Injuries hurt the offensive line most of both seasons as well. As a result, Purdue could not run the football, and three different quarterbacks threw at least 100 passes in both seasons.

If the offensive line can stay healthy, this is a passing game that can be dangerous against anyone in the Big Ten. David Bell is the best receiver in the conference this side of Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave. Bell will need some help; expect Junior receiver Milton Wright and tight end Payne Durham to have bigger seasons.

Purdue needs to run the football more. The interior of their offensive line should be solid with Gus Hartwig at the center and Tyler Witt at guard alongside an improved Spencer Holstege at the other guard. That trio should be formidable in the run game. Brohm and the Boilers need to show some commitment to the running game, however.

Zander Horvath runs like Purdue legend Mike Alstott with a bit more wiggle. However, running the football an average of 25 times per game like last season will not get it done. The Purdue offense can be dangerous, but Brohm needs balance to take the pressure off of Aidan O’Connell or Jack Plummer, whoever starts for the Boilermakers next season.
