With lots of roster turnover and a tough schedule, can head coach Chad Lunsford guide Georgia Southern Football to another bowl game?

Georgia Southern Football has long been a consistent program that is not used to losing much at all. From the glory days of Erk Russell and Paul Johnson and Jeff Monken to moving up to the division one level under Willie Fritz, the Eagles are one of the most consistent programs in the country that you probably never hear about. In 2021, that program consistency is going to be challenged in a big way.

The Eagles accomplished something in 2020 that should truly be admired: they played thirteen games and did so without many interruptions. That led to Georgia Southern football being able to play in thirteen games and nearly pulling some big upsets against Louisiana and Coastal Carolina. This season is going to be the most challenging yet under Lunsford.

Former starting quarterback Shai Werts transferred to Louisville and he was a consistent presence for the Eagles for the past several years. Werts was one of many departures from the program, but he is no doubt the biggest one. 2021 will test the strength of the past year’s recruiting classes under Lunsford, as they are going to need several new faces to emerge.

Ever since the Eagles made the move to the division one level, they have hit the ground running, which can be uncommon for schools making that leap.

They won the Sun Belt in their first year of competition in 2014 and then made their first bowl game in the school history in 2015 and won.

After Fritz left in 2015, the program suffered a small setback by hiring Tyson Summers, but they quickly realized that mistake and moved on from Summers quickly and hiring Lunsford to replace him. Lunsford has done a great job and is a fan favorite amongst the program, but this is going to be a huge test for the Eagles.
