How will Western Michigan football fare in 2021?

Western Michigan will play Michigan and Pittsburgh in non-conference play, but the schedule is made for the Broncos to have a nice season and potentially make a run for the West if they can find a way to beat both Ball State and Central Michigan.

  • Game 1: at Michigan (L) — The Broncos won’t have enough to pull the massive upset on the road.
  • Game 2: Illinois State (W) — Broncos should put big numbers up against one of the worst teams they will play this season.
  • Game 3: at Pittsburgh (L) — Another tough non-conference game will result in a sizeable loss for WMU.
  • Game 4: San Jose State (W) — This will be a tough game against the defending MWC champs, but I think the Broncos’ offense is good enough.
  • Game 5: at Buffalo (L) — The Broncos could use a win here in their MAC opener, but a road game against the Bulls will be too tough.
  • Game 6: Ball State (W) — The Cardinals are my pick to repeat in the MAC, but I think the Broncos pull an upset at home.
  • Game 7: Kent State (W) — Expect a shootout in this one between two really good quarterbacks, but I think WMU has the better defense.
  • Game 8: at Toledo (L) — Toledo is a tough place to play and I think the Rockets will get the win versus WMU.
  • Game 9: Central Michigan (W) — Expect a fun game with the Chippewas and I think the Broncos get the big win here.
  • Game 10: Akron (W) — Expect the Broncos to blow out one of the worst teams in the MAC.
  • Game 11: at Eastern Michigan (W) — Another game with shootout potential, but I think the Broncos’ offense is just a bit better.
  • Game 12: at Northern Illinois (W) — Broncos close the season out with a win versus a rebuilding NIU squad.

Final Record: 8-4, 6-2 MAC

If the Broncos can navigate the first half of the schedule, it sets up nicely for them on the back end. Five of their first six games are going to be very challenging and will show if the Broncos are ready to contend for the MAC title or if they will fall short once again.
