Liberty Football: Can Flames replicate success from 2020?
Liberty brings back most starters from one of the nation’s best defenses
You might think that Liberty football is one of those programs that puts up yards and points on offense and does not play any defense, but you would be wrong if you thought that. Now, Liberty might have good defense rankings because of their opponents, but this group deserves a lot of credit and I think they can be even better this season.
The defensive line is going to be led by their defensive ends in Durrell Johnson and Tre’Shaun Clark, who combined for 14 sacks last season and will be counted on for even more this season. At defensive tackle, seniors Elijah James and Ralfs Rusins are going to be back and they should make an impact in the run game and as pass rushers.
At linebacker, Aaron Pierre is going to lead the group after being third on the team in tackles a season ago and he will be joined by Carl Poole, who is coming off of shoulder surgery, and Javon Scruggs is going to be at the rover position. Scruggs led the team in tackles and is one of the best players on the entire team.
In the secondary, Chris Megginson and Marcus Haskins are going to man the outside and Juawan Treadwell and Cedric Stone are going to be at safety. This team could really get better at forcing turnovers and that will be one of the things that the defense will need to work on.
