As the hype continues to build with the HBCU college football season less than a month away from kickoff, BOXTOROW has announced its HBCU preseason All-American team.

The offensive team is headlined by Deacon Jones trophy winner and quarterback of the reigning SWAC champion Alabama A&M Bulldogs Aqeel Glass.

Meanwhile, the defensive side features reigning Buck Buchanan award winner Southern defensive end Jordan Lewis. In addition to being named to the Buck Buchanan Award watch list, Jordan Lewis was also named to Stats Perform’s FCS preseason All-American team.

The SWAC has the most additions by conference with 20 of the 30 players selected. The CIAA has the second-most with three players (all from Bowie State).

The Alabama State Hornets have the most preseason selections of any team with six players total including three players on offense and defense respectively.

Interestingly, SWAC championship runner-ups Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff has the second-most players selected with four more than reigning SWAC champion Alabama A&M Bulldogs who have three.

Of the five players selected from non-HBCU conferences, three came from the Tennessee State Tigers. The other two are running back Jah-Maine Martin from Big South new addition North Carolina A&T Aggies and wide receiver Jadakis Bonds from the Hampton Pirates.

Jah Maine-Martin is the only offensive player that appears on this list, Stat Perform’s FCS Preseason All-American team, and the Walter Payton Award watch list.

The SIAC is the only of the four majority HBCU conference to not have any players selected to the BOXTOROW preseason team.

Notable omissions include Alcorn State quarterback and 2019 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year Felix Harper, Norfolk State quarterback and MEAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Juwan Carter, and FCS Preseason All-American selection Florida A&M defensive back Markquese Bell.
