Michigan Football: Jim Harbaugh once again on hot seat
No coach might be under more pressure than Jim Harbaugh and he needs to guide Michigan Football to a big season to quiet things down
It seems like this has been a storyline for the last 2-3 seasons in college football, but Jim Harbaugh and Michigan Football enter the 2021 season under a considerable amount of pressure.
I think the level at which Harbaugh has underachieved at Michigan can be overblown because he has won a lot of football games and made Michigan relevant and a top-10 team some years, but there is no denying that this program has underachieved relative to expectations.
Last season was a disaster on many fronts for the Wolverines and they are hopeful that they can move on from it quickly.
The one thing that Michigan fans had been able to count on under Harbaugh was that the Wolverines would have a top-notch defense and that would make up for any offensive shortcomings.
Michigan football was starting to get exposed in games against Ohio State the past couple of seasons, but the bottom fell out for the Michigan defense and that led to the dismissal of Don Brown as defensive coordinator.
Harbaugh made the decision to hire Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Mike Macdonald in hopes he can turn the defense around.
Once again, however, the biggest question mark about Michigan football is the quarterback position.
Harbaugh was a highly touted quarterback coach and developer when he came to Michigan, but the results have been dismal at the position and he has failed to recruit and develop his own quarterback. Last year’s part-time starter Joe Milton left for Tennessee and it will be a competition between the other starter from last season Cade McNamara, Texas Tech transfer Alan Bowman, and five-star recruit J.J McCarthy to battle it out. Harbaugh needs to show signs of life or it might be best for both parties to move on and try something new.
