2. Adrian Martinez is the best player for the ‘Huskers

With the transfer of WanDale Robinson this offseason, quarterback Adrian Martinez is officially the best player on Nebraska’s roster. Even with the additions of USC transfer, running back Markese Stepp and Montana transfer, wide receiver Toure Samori, the offense goes through Martinez.

Martinez is the best playmaker on the offense, and he is who Illinois football will key on in this game. The true junior is a dual-threat who led the ‘Huskers in passing and rushing last season.

Frost and the offensive staff give Martinez as much responsibility at the line of scrimmage as any quarterback in the country. Because of that, the Illini need to confuse Martinez, giving him multiple looks at the line of scrimmage during his pre-snap reads.

Either Jake Hansen or Owen Carney will have the responsibility of spying on Martinez. The Illini need to keep Martinez in the pocket on passing downs and know their responsibilities on RPOs or option-read plays.

The defensive line has to win with three when they can. However, Illinois, like most other teams, is multiple on the defensive line. The Illini have to limit the Nebraska run game and force the Huskers to be one-dimensional.

If Martinez finds a rhythm running and throwing the football, it could be a long day for Illinois defensively.
