Defense holds its own

One reason why Nebraska football fans are optimistic heading into the 2021 season is the defense should finally be a strength.

The defense had its ups and downs last season, including a game where it allowed Illinois to run all over it. In the last two games, the Fighting Illini have rushed for more than 500 yards against Nebraska. That can’t happen Saturday and I don’t believe it will.

The front seven is loaded with not just experience, but depth. And many of those guys are super seniors. Damion Daniels is back in the middle and Ty Robinson is among the defenders due for a breakout season.

Illinois does have an experienced quarterback in Brandon Peters. He led Illinois to a bowl game two years ago, but his career completion percentage is in the mid-50s and the Illini have some weapons, but the Husker secondary should be able to hold its own.

That will be especially true if the Huskers can stop the ground game. That’s the key and if the defense can hold Illinois in check — under 150 yards or so — it will put a lot of pressure on Peters, who is anything but dynamic.

Peters will lead Illinois to some points but he will also give the ball away as the Huskers will force two takeaways and keep the Illini under 20.
