We’ve seen it before: sometimes, one loss is enough to keep a team out of the College Football Playoff. In a sport where every game matters, a team’s season can be destroyed the first week of the year.

Take BYU’s upset of Oklahoma in 2009. Yes, an injury to Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford played a major role, but the Sooners didn’t recover from that loss. A few years earlier, fifth-ranked Michigan lost to App State in one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

In more recent memory, had Iowa State won the Big 12 last season, a Week 1 loss to Louisiana would have likely kept them out.

Speaking of the Big 12 last season, week one was less than stellar for the conference. In addition to Louisiana’s upset of Iowa State, Kansas State was defeated by another Sun Belt team in Arkansas State and Kansas lost to Coastal Carolina. Texas Tech won but barely escaped against Houston Baptist, a program that has a 19-59 record in their history.

Unfortunately for the Big 12, there’s potential for another week of disaster in 2021.

As always, a brief disclaimer: these upset alert picks are not predictions unless stated as such. These are just games that have the potential for upsets.
