2. Hank Bachmeier was the right choice for QB1

Despite the team’s struggles in the second half, Hank Bachmeier looked like the right guy for the starting job throughout Thursday’s game in hostile territory.

Bachmeier was impressive in the first half, hitting just about every big throw and making no mistakes. There was some miscommunication with him and his running backs with a couple of fumbled handoffs and bobbled snaps, but that will improve throughout the season as these guys get more comfortable with each other.

But Bachmeier beating out USC transfer Jack Sears for the starting job looked like the right call. Bachmeier found himself on the wrong end of a quarterback duel in the second half as Dillon Gabriel went off but a lot of the Broncos’ struggles weren’t his fault (we’ll get to that later).

After another big interception late by the Broncos that put the offense in good field position with a chance to take a lead, Bachmeier made all the right throws to get Boise State into the end zone and up 31-30. Central Florida did strike right back, though.

He did make a poor decision late in the fourth quarter with the game on the line, throwing a pick into coverage when Boise State was driving. That was his lone mistake of the game.

Anyone who was worried about the quarterback position can rest easy knowing that Bachmeier was the right choice, finishing with 263 yards and two touchdowns and a late pick.
