Georgia football is aiming for a national championship in 2021 and the Bulldogs got off to a brilliant start on Saturday against Clemson.

It wasn’t pretty and it might have even been confused for an old-school Big Ten battle, but Georgia football fans won’t care and neither will the Bulldogs, because their 10-3 win over Clemson, while not flashy, will be effective in the race for the College Football Playoff.

Obviously, Georgia football still has a long way to go on that front. The Bulldogs face the always daunting SEC but after watching their defense dismantle Clemson, the rest of the league can’t be excited about facing UGA anytime soon.

Here are three takeaways from the Bulldogs’ win

QBs were far from elite

It wasn’t a surprise to see both defenses play well. The Bulldogs and Tigers were each loaded on that side of the ball. But with talented quarterbacks, it felt, at least leading into the matchup, that there would be some offensive excitement.

That idea was wrong though.

Both JT Daniels and D.J. Uiagalelei struggled, throwing an interception each, although Uiagalelei’s pick-six to Georiga football defender Christopher Smith was much more costly and proved to be the difference Saturday night.

Uiagalelei, who had two games with more than 300 yards passing and over 400 against Notre Dame last season, was like a deer in the headlights in Charlotte. Georgia sacked him eight times, which pushed his rushing total down to -22 yards. He completed just 18-of-37 passes and averaged only 4.8 per attempt.

Daniels also averaged fewer than five yards per pass and was held under 200 yards. The fact that the two combined for two interceptions and just 315 yards was on the surprising side.
