What it means for the playoff

Leading up to this game, it was projected that by the ESPN FPI that it would have more impact on the College Football Playoff than any other during the season.

If you think about it, the logic makes sense.

Despite the loss to Georgia, Clemson is still going to be the favorite to win the ACC, especially since North Carolina and Miami looked rough this weekend.

The Tigers could still run the table and if they won the ACC, they would have a pretty solid resume as a 12-1 team. But one key part of the decision-making criteria is head-to-head and Georgia football has that advantage over Clemson.

Georgia hasn’t been able to get by Alabama and won’t face the Tide this year until a hypothetical SEC championship game matchup. The Bulldogs have faced that scenario a few times needing a win over Bama to reach the playoff only to falter.

If that happened again this season, it might not spell doom for the Bulldogs. If Georgia just got the SEC title game undefeated, a competitive loss to Alabama should be enough for a playoff berth.

Georgia still has a chance to score marquee wins in the regular season, probably more chances than Clemson, which probably needs Georgia to have two losses by the final weekend.

Otherwise, it would be really hard to put Clemson past Georgia, a team it was beaten by earlier in the season.

For Georgia football, the scenario is perfect, as a win over Alabama might not be required for a playoff berth, giving the Bulldogs some margin for error.
