Notre Dame Football: 3 hot takes as Irish avoid upset at Florida State
Jack Coan is a Heisman contender
There were a lot of doubters about Jack Coan coming into the season after he was named the starter for Notre Dame football at quarterback. After Sunday night’s game, those doubters are pretty quiet. Coan was outstanding in his debut for Notre Dame.
Jack Coan had himself a great opening game as the Irish starter. Coan really showed a lot of poise and made some huge throws downfield that you really did not see during his Wisconsin Badger days under center.
The graduate transfer did not panic at any time throughout the game even when times got tough which is what you love to see out of the veteran quarterback.
Coan finished the game completing 26 of 35 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns. He did have one pick but that was on a Hail Mary attempt right before the half.
It really was great to see Jack Coan throwing the ball to different targets and getting multiple guys involved on offense. Mayer was his favorite target on the night, but his four touchdowns were to four different receivers which is great to see if you are an Irish fan. Spread the wealth and get multiple guys involved in the action.
Yes, I know that the Heisman trophy is not awarded after one game but after one week Coan definitely has the attention of the college football world. If Coan plays like he did on Sunday night all year then he will be in the Heisman discussion at the end of the year.
Some will say that Notre Dame did not deserve to win the game with how they finished down the stretch. But at the end of the day, Notre Dame football did enough to escape a hostile road environment with a huge victory.
If Notre Dame can clean up some things on both sides of the ball then they will find themselves in the discussion for a playoff spot down the road. For now, it’s time to turn the page to focus on Toledo in the home opener next Saturday in Notre Dame Stadium.
Hopefully, the Monday night game between Louisville and Ole Miss can be just as exciting to end the final game of week one on a high note.
