3. Pittsburgh at Tennessee

Pitt and Tennessee have not met on the gridiron since 1983 but the two programs have a shared connection in legendary coach Johnny Majors, who coached at both schools. Majors led the Panthers to a national title in 1976 and later coached the Vols to three SEC titles. He will be honored this Saturday.

Neither team had much of a test last Saturday as Pitt disposed of UMass 51-7 while Tennessee handled Bowling Green 38-6. This contest should be more challenging for both.

Pitt’s running backs do not strike fear in opposing defenses but the Vols will have to game plan for quarterback Kenny Pickett’s legs. Last season Pickett rushed for eight touchdowns in goal-to-go situations.

The Vols fast tempo offense under first year coach Josh Heupel will look to test the Panthers defense, especially their young secondary. If the offense gets going early, it could put a lot of pressure on the Panthers and wear them down.

After last weekend’s poor showing, the ACC could really use a big win. While Tennessee is not at the top of the conference, they are still a SEC team with some clout. The game certainly means more to the Panthers and should be an interesting one to watch.
