It’s hard to believe that Boise State football was winless heading into Friday night’s game against UTEP but the Broncos fell in the opener to UCF despite putting up a valiant effort.

That 0-1 record didn’t seem to matter against the 2-0 Miners as Boise State dominated from start to finish, beating UTEP 54-13.

Hank Bachmeier looked like what we expected when the season began, passing for 340 yards and two touchdowns with no picks on 17-of-24 completions. We also saw George Holani return and Khalil Shakir have another monster game.

What’d we learn from the Broncos’ first win of the season?

3. Run game is a work in progress

It was good to see George Holani back for this one even though he did rush just five times for 22 yards and a touchdown. He showed that he can still be a solid back in this offense when fully healthy and we’ll just have to wait and see the finished product.

Sophomores Taequan Tyler and Tyler Crowe were pleasant surprises, rushing for 73 yards on 12 carries, but outside of them, there was really no consistent production on the ground.

After rushing for just 20 yards in the opener, Boise State had 37 carries for just 121 yards, averaging 3.3 per touch but the Broncos did score three touchdowns on the ground. Obviously not a great follow-up performance from a forgettable opener.

There were positives in the run game, but there’s just too much inconsistency right now.
