USC football must at least gauge Urban Meyer’s interest

Clay Helton is out. After an embarrassing blowout loss to Stanford in Week 2, USC football has moved on from the head coach which is surprising timing given the fact that he probably could have been out before the 2020 season.

USC had a prime opportunity to let Helton walk a couple of years ago, following the departure of Urban Meyer at Ohio State. The Trojans could have struck gold and hired Meyer.

It would have made all the sense in the world.

Meyer once said that his “dream job” was Notre Dame and the other was USC. He gave Ohio State some really good years and won a national title after “retiring” from his job with Florida and then he kind of did the same with the Buckeyes. He decided to take some time off and then the Jacksonville Jaguars came a-knocking.

The legendary head coach had no option but to entertain the NFL because that is probably on everyone’s bucket list. He jumped at the opportunity and he was off the board for USC which had already decided to retain Helton. It was a massive mistake.

Now just two games into the 2021 season, the Trojans are looking for a new head coach after cutting ties with Helton and Meyer is 0-1 with a blowout loss at Houston in his debut — and the Texans were supposed to be one of the worst teams in the NFL.

USC football needs to inquire about Urban Meyer

Would Meyer entertain a college return if he doesn’t love his first year in the NFL? It’d be something to consider.

It would make the most sense to at least ask him if he’s interested in leading his “dream school” back to the top. He would have a tough time thinking that his future with a really bad NFL team is better than going to one of the top programs in college football and getting back to the big stage sooner rather than later.

USC needs to reach out and make him an offer he can’t refuse.
