College football Power-5 coaches who should have been gone before 2021 season
Years as current head coach: 7
Record with current school: 51-22
Conference record with current school: 34-16
In 2021: 2-0
Unlike the other coaches on this list, Jim Harbaugh isn’t losing. He simply isn’t winning the important games, and he’s yet to even sniff any sort of championship — division, conference, or national.
Michigan is one of “those jobs” where the head coach isn’t expected to just have a winning program. They want rings, trophies, and bragging rights.
Jim Harbaugh has brought none of that into his seventh season as the Wolverines head coach, and the fact that he wasn’t replaced after 2020 made a lot of people scratch their heads and wonder what’s going on in Ann Arbor.
Michigan is paying Jim Harbaugh a lot of money and giving him a lot of perks to beat Michigan State and Ohio State, win the Big Ten, and at least make a showing in the College Football Playoff.
To date, the only thing he’s accomplished on that list is to beat Michigan State three out of six times.
It’s a sure thing money is what’s holding the Michigan power brokers back from sending Harbaugh packing, but at some point, they will want to see a return on their investment and a buyout won’t be a hurdle.
Prediction: Barring a complete meltdown, Harbaugh will finish 2021 at Michigan. Without a win over Ohio State and a Big Ten Championship Game appearance, it’s not likely he returns.
