College football Power-5 coaches who should have been gone before 2021 season
Years as current head coach: 6
Record with current school: 46-15
Conference record with current school: 28-12
In 2021: 1-1
Yes, Ed Orgeron brought a national championship to LSU in 2019…or, did he?
While he was lauded as the coach of the year by many that season, it was pretty obvious to some (myself included) that Orgeron’s choices of assistant coaches and an unexpected miracle season by quarterback Joe Burrow were more responsible for the Tigers record-setting 2019 than Coach O.
Without Burrow, former passing game coordinator Joe Brady, and former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, Orgeron looks like the middling coach who wasn’t able to get the job done at either Ole Miss or USC.
LSU limped to a 5-5 finish in 2020 and given the talent on their roster, there’s no way that should have happened. When you recruit at a level the Tigers do, finishing a season at or under .500 should be the high sign that a coach needs to go.
Throw in the fact that outside of 2019, Orgeron’s record has been a big basket of meh, and an opening week loss to Pac-12 flavor-of-the-week UCLA, it’s clear Orgeron should have been looking for work during this past offseason.
Prediction: Orgeron might have lasted until Halloween until the recent incident challenging a fan to a fight. He’ll be gone by Week 5.
