5. Marshall Thundering Herd: 2-0

It is possible that the Herd could find themselves on the outs of the list simply because of the schedule. After consecutive blowout wins against Navy and North Carolina Central, the Herd have a tough East Carolina squad and Appalachian State, who gave Miami all they could handle.

For Marshall to stay on the watch and have an opportunity at the New Year’s Six, the Herd needs some help getting there.

4. Army Black Knights: 2-0

The Black Knights have a run of games that could land them in the New Year’s Six. After their game against UConn this weekend, the Army has a stretch of games that includes last season’s MAC champions Ball State, Wake Forest, and 18th-ranked Wisconsin.

If the Knights could somehow come out of the next month unscathed, they would have an argument. That is, however, easier said than done. This is not an easy stretch, but Army is always a difficult game because it is a special prep offense.

Not only that, Army plays sound defense that does a great job against offenses that have a talent advantage. The Black Knights don’t beat themselves with penalties or blown coverages either. The most important thing for Army is health.

Christian Anderson has to stay healthy at quarterback. Anderson had issues staying healthy last season, however. If Army can stay healthy, they have a chance.
