Will Florida State football continue to struggle against Wake Forest?

To put things delicately, Florida State football just might be at the lowest point that the college football world has ever seen it.

Currently dealing with an unpleasant record of 0-2, Florida State has fallen in back-to-back home games, one being to Notre Dame, and the other being to Jacksonville State, a team so small that it fails to even hold FBS status.

Considering that the latter is Florida State’s first-ever loss to an FCS opponent, and the fact that the Seminoles have what is officially one of the toughest schedules of 2021, this season can quite possibly be one of the worst in the program’s predominantly elite history.

What makes the future look especially bleak for the ACC power is the fact that while Jacksonville State is a formidable foe at their own level of play, they were still supposed to be one of the Seminoles’ easiest wins to claim. In other words, if they cannot even muster enough strength to overcome the Gamecocks, who can they overcome? Perhaps Wake Forest?

Can Florida State football bounce back?

The Demon Deacons are historically one of the worst Power Five programs to ever grace the college football landscape, and that title has come with many losses to Florida State — most namely over the past 30 years.

Of almost 40 meetings all-time between the two programs, Wake Forest has only prevailed seven times. Those numbers do not exactly illustrate an overly-promising probability of the Deacs winning this Saturday.

However, the fortunes that have graced each team have been very different within the last four years or so.

In 2018, the Seminoles missed their first bowl game in the better part of 50 years, and did so again in 2020 (they refused to play in any had they been invited to do so, but it is still officially a bowl-less year nonetheless). Meanwhile, they have seen three different faces at head coach since the latter half of the 2017 season.

As for Wake, they are currently in the process of unfolding one of their strongest runs in program history.

Since 2016, the Demon Deacons have participated in five consecutive bowl seasons, which is already a school record. Also, they successfully defeated Florida State in their last encounter with one another (2019).

So, whether it pertains to this season so far, two years ago, or even five years ago, Wake Forest has convincingly outperformed the Seminoles; and they look to do so some more this weekend in Winston-Salem. The Deacs will advance to 3-0, and FSU will fall to 0-3, leaving head coach Mike Norvell in an even hotter seat than the one he currently sits in.
