West Virginia Football: 3 reasons Mountaineers will upset Virginia Tech
West Virginia football opened the season with a disappointing road loss to Maryland and while that looked like it was going to crush any lofty goals the Mountaineers had, they bounced back to shut out Long Island University in Week 2, 66-0.
While LIU isn’t exactly a world-beater, the Mountaineers still needed a confidence-boosting win and got it in a big way ahead of a huge home game against the No. 15 team in the country.
Virginia Tech beat the No. 10 team in the country to start the year and then beat Middle Tennessee a week ago by 21 points. The Hokies seem to be rolling and Justin Fuente’s job seems to be secure — for now — but West Virginia is hungry for a major non-conference upset.
Here’s why the Mountaineers will upset Virginia Tech.
3. West Virginia hasn’t lost a home game since 2019
Year one of Neal Brown wasn’t the best as he finished 5-7 and lost a handful of home games, but that all changed in 2020 as the Mountaineers went unbeaten in Morgantown.
To make matters even better for West Virginia ahead of this game, Virginia Tech has been pretty poor on the road since the start of the 2019 season. In 10 road games during that span, the Hokies are just 4-6.
West Virginia is going to take advantage of fans being back in the stands in one of the biggest games Morgantown has seen in years and No. 15 Virginia Tech is going to feel the pressure of 60,000 rabid Mountaineer fans breathing down its neck.
The two-season long streak of no losses at home will continue on Saturday.
