Best teams to never make CFB Playoffs: 7. Ohio State, 2017

It was some pretty tough sledding for Ohio State to kick off the 2017 season.

After the committee agreed that they were the second-best team in the nation before the year, they laid an egg against Oklahoma, losing 31-16. The Buckeyes would then go on to embarrass themselves a few weeks later, losing to unranked Iowa by a million points. Okay, it was actually 31 but you get the idea.

That loss effectively ended any hope they had of making the College Football Playoffs but it shouldn’t have.

During the tail end of the season, Ohio State finally got their act together. They smacked around number 13 Michigan State, earning a 45 point win. They then followed that up with back-to-back victories against number 3 Wisconsin and number 8 USC.

Ohio State may have picked up a few bumps along the road but all in all, they were a great team. The best and most impactful player out of that group was quarterback J.T. Barrett. The Heisman hopeful threw for 3,053 yards, 35 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 798 yards and 12 scores. It’s a shame, once the Buckeyes found their identity, they were essentially impossible to beat. For example, the victory they picked up over Wisconsin is extremely underrated. The Badgers flaunted the best defense in the nation that season and the Buckeyes had no trouble scoring.

If only they figured things out a bit sooner.
