Best teams to never make CFB Playoffs: 2. UCF, 2017

Just two years prior to the 2017 College Football season, just the mere mention of the UCF program brought about consistent laughing and finger-pointing. The program was never thought of that highly but they reached an all-time low status in 2015. On the year, UCF finished 0-12. In 2016, they got a bit better, wrapping up the year at 6-7. But no one, absolutely no one thought they were capable of having a magical run like the one they had in 2017.

UCF ran through the competition. They finished as the American Athletic Conference champions and the Peach Bowl champions. It was a perfect season as they closed the 2017 chapter with a record of 13-0. Still, that wasn’t enough to get them a spot in the College Football Playoff.

It could be because UCF has never been known as a powerhouse. Or it’s quite possibly because the committee thought it was a fluke. Whatever was the reasoning behind it, we simply don’t believe it was right. UCF may have played ten unranked teams to start the season but they wrapped up their year by taking on three highly ranked foes.

Number 22 South Florida, number 16 Memphis, and even number 7 Auburn all fell at the hands of UCF. But not only would UCF fail to crack the top four, but they would also be forced to settle for 6 on the poles. In the end, while they were never given the opportunity to play for a National Championship, they can take solace in being declared National Champs in another way.
