Best teams to never make CFB Playoffs: 14. Florida, 2019

The Florida Gators came out and punched several teams in the mouth at the beginning of the 2019 college football season. They gave UT Martin a one-sided beating in Week 3, winning 45-0. They followed that up by totally embarrassing the Tennessee Volunteers, 34-3. If anyone believed they were simply front runners, they proved their doubters wrong.

In a game against the seventh-ranked team in the nation, the Auburn Tigers, Florida took them down fairly easily, winning 24-13.

Florida was a great overall team, but their success was mostly built on their defense. They ranked 10th in total yards allowed per game with 299. Felipe Franks started the season for the Gators but after going down with an injury, Kyle Trask stepped in and they didn’t miss a beat. Trask ultimately threw for 2,941 yards and 25 touchdowns in his abbreviated season.

Any chances they had of making the College Football Playoff basically fell to zero once they picked up losses to undefeated LSU and perennial contenders, Georgia.

With Trask under center, Florida had the sort of offense that could compete with anyone. Furthermore, their defense could slow teams down. The loss to LSU was understandable since everyone that stood in their path was run over but if Florida simply would’ve taken down Georgia, they would’ve punched their ticket to the College Football Playoff and made things pretty interesting for everyone involved.
