Best teams to never make CFB Playoffs: 8. Penn State, 2017

Once again, we have a team that held destiny in its own hands and fell woefully short with the finish line so close.

The Penn State Nittany Lions came out looking dominant to kick off the 2017 college football season. In two of the first three games, they beat teams by a combined score of, you ready for this? 108-0. We’ll repeat that, 108-0. The Lions were practically unstoppable

Penn State mowed down their first six opponents on the season, all against unranked foes. Then, they made a statement when they took on their first big-time team, destroying number 19 Michigan 42-13. One loss to Ohio State made a major dent in their College Football Playoffs hopes but they were officially out of it when they took another loss. This time, to number 24 Michigan State. While they went on to win their four remaining games, they were forced to watch the party from the outside.

What makes Penn State an interesting entrance on this list is their running back/quarterback combination.

Trace McSorley threw for over 3,500 yards while Saquon Barkley ran for over 1,200. With that type of offense, most of the world wanted to see what they could do on the big stage.
