Penn State Football: 3 hot takes in huge win over Auburn
Penn State football notched another top-25 win on Saturday night in a “White Out” and here are three hot takes from the Nittany Lions win.
A Saturday night home game for Penn State football under the lights. A top 25 matchup, and a maxed capacity white-out-themed crowd going crazy in happy valley. We sure missed nights like this last year in 2020. All that was needed was for this game between Penn State and Auburn to live up to the hype.
As a college football fanatic, it was definitely an exciting game as Penn State won this matchup 28-20 over Auburn. There were late touchdown drives by both teams, big plays on both sides, and also some questionable controversial calls by the referees as well. This game really had it all and was definitely one of the more entertaining games of the young season so far.
I do not like bringing up the referees as their jobs are very hard, but one thing that just cannot happen is losing track of the actual down on the field. You may not always agree with a penalty like pass interference, holding, etc. But Penn State football had to actually punt on 3rd down.
Yes, if you did not watch the game you read that correctly. Penn State literally had to punt on 3rd down because they were told it was 4th down by the refs on the field in the first half of the game.
Thankfully the next possession Auburn did not score or really move the ball. That would have been hard to explain to Penn State football after the game if they ended up losing the game because of that sequence.
Penn State football (3-0) is one of the hottest teams in the country so far this season. The Nittany Lions now have two top 25 wins under their belt in wins over Wisconsin and now Auburn. You want to rack up as many top-quality wins as you can for playoff implications down the road.
Penn State was also able to snap their streak of losing to SEC teams. The Nittany Lions entered Saturday’s game losing their last five games to SEC schools. You have to go back all the way to 2010 to find Penn State’s last win before tonight over an SEC team when they defeated LSU 19-17 in a low-scoring Capital One Bowl.
Auburn (2-1) as announcer Kirk Herbstreit said multiple times is a good football team and has plenty of good football ahead of them in the future. Just fell a little short tonight. Everyone that follows college football knows about Auburn quarterback Bo Nix on the road and his struggles, especially with turnovers.
Bo Nix did not turn it over on his end, but only threw for 187 yards on 37 passes, and finished with a QBR of 71. The quarterback play has to be better than that, especially against a top 10 team on the road with an experienced defensive unit.
