Ranking the biggest college football upsets from Week 3
It was another wild week of college football and here is a ranking of the top upsets from Week 3 of the season.
With a great slate of mostly non-conference games around the country, there were bound to be a few college football upsets in Week 3. Fans were not disappointed, as three Top-25 teams suffered defeat, plus countless other Power 5 schools losing to Group of 5 schools.
First, let’s look at several teams who barely escaped Week 3 with a win. These are teams that won by less than 7 points, coming THIS close to being upset by an underdog.
No. 1 Alabama survived against No. 11 Florida, winning by two points.
No. 4 Oklahoma held off Nebraska, escaping by seven.
No. 9 Clemson barely beat Georgia Tech, notching a victory by six.
No. 17 Coastal Carolina had trouble with Buffalo, winning by three.
Kentucky struggled against Chattanooga, coming out on top by five.
Oklahoma State narrowly defeated Boise St, winning by one.
Louisville had fits with Central Florida, coming out on top by seven.
Now, let’s rank the teams that were actually able to pull of the upset, and there were a lot of them this week.
No. 7 Biggest college football upset of Week 3
San Diego State upsets Utah 33-31 in Triple Overtime
The San Diego State Aztecs (3-0) of the Mountain West Conference defeated Utah (1-2) of the Pac-12, giving SDSU their third straight win of the season.
Despite only notching 44 passing yards in the entire game, SDSU relied on its special teams to help get the win over Utah. The Aztecs ran a kickoff back for a 100-yard touchdown and kicker Matt Araiza chipped in seven points on field goals and extra-point kicks. Senior running back Greg Bell powered his way to two rushing touchdowns on 119 yards.
Utah has struggled this year, surrendering a loss to BYU in Week 2 and defeating Weber State in the opening game of the season.
San Diego State will try to extend their winning streak when they host Towson in Week 4. Utah will try to earn their second win of the season when they take on conference opponent Washington State.
