Ranking the biggest college football upsets from Week 3
No. 2 Biggest college football upset of Week 3
West Virginia upsets No. 15 Virginia Tech 27-21
You have to go all the way back to 2014 to find a game when West Virginia beat someone ranked higher than No. 15, so it’s understandable that the Mountaineers were elated when they beat their easterly rivals.
Entering the game, this Virginia Tech defense had only allowed three total touchdowns this season. But a balanced attack from West Virginia (192 passing yards, 188 rushing yards) helped the team get off to an early hot start. They led Virginia Tech 24-7 at halftime.
The Hokies held the Mountaineers to just three second-half points— a herculean effort by Virginia Tech— but it was not enough to survive the upset.
West Virginia is now 2-1 on the season and will prepare to take on No. 4 Oklahoma in Week 4. Virginia Tech is no longer ranked but will face the Richmond Spiders next week to get back on track.
No. 1 Biggest college football upset of Week 3
Fresno State upsets No. 13 UCLA 40-37
The UCLA Bruins were the highest-ranked team to lose in Week 3 of college football. The Fresno State Bulldogs willed their way to a victory in a shootout against the revitalized Bruins.
A combined 34 points were scored in the fourth quarter alone, including a touchdown strike by senior QB Jake Haener with 14 seconds left in the game to give the Bulldogs the massive upset.
Haener had one of the best (if not the best) statistical performances of Week 3, hitting 39 of 53 passes for 455 yards and 2 touchdowns, which gave senior runningback Ronnie Rivers plenty of running lanes to rush for 136 yards and score 2 touchdowns.
The Bruins were led by dual-threat senior QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who was 14 of 24 for 278 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 13 rushes for 67 yards.
Fresno State is a really good football team, they are now ranked No. 22 in the AP Top-25 poll. They’re now 3-1 on the season with a heartbreaking loss to No. 4 Oregon in Week 2, 31-24. The Bulldogs play UNLV next week and No. 24 UCLA (2-1) will play Stanford in Week 4.
