SMU Football (3-0) meets the Texas Christian Horned Frogs (2-0) in an in-state, cross-conference rivalry game in Week 4 of college football.

A lot of excitement is brewing for the return of the Battle for the Iron Skillet, a rivalry game that has been played on a near annual basis since 1915. There have only been six years since 1915 that this series was not played, 2020 being one of them.

Sonny Dykes, head coach of SMU, is looking to start 4-0 for the third straight season. TCU is looking for it’s first 3-0 start since 2017, a season in which they finished 11-3.

Let’s check out three bold predictions before the highly anticipated Battle for the Iron Skillet.

3. SMU Football QB Tanner Mordecai officially enters the Heisman Trophy conversation

Junior QB Tanner Mordecai has been on an absolute tear this season, throwing for more than 1,000 yards and dialing in 16 touchdowns through the first three games of the young season. In fact, he’s thrown more touchdown passes than any Divison-1 QB in the country and it’s not even close. The second-best passing touchdown total is 11, which has been done by Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong and LSU’s Max Johnson. His 1,023 passing yards are enough for sixth-most among all college QBs through Week 3.

Mordecai has been named the AAC player of the week for two out of three weeks this season and for good reason. He’s putting up huge numbers and he has the Mustangs off to a 3-0 start this season.

Expect the gunslinger to be focused and ready to make a statement against TCU. Mordecai spent the first three years of his college football career in the Big 12 at Oklahoma, before transferring to SMU, so he’s familiar with the Horned Frogs and the style they play.

If Mordecai can put up big numbers against a Power 5 team, it’ll boost his resume and start getting his name mentioned in Heisman Trophy conversations.
