A more confident quarterback

Zach Calzada certainly wasn’t the preferred option at quarterback for Texas A&M football this season but so far, he’s done what he’s needed to do.

The game against Colorado wasn’t pretty and that was a tough situation to be thrust into. But Calzada responded when it was necessary and led the Aggies down the field for a win, on the road.

Now, he’s leading the seventh-ranked team in the country against one of its biggest rivals, with the eyes of the college football world watching.

It’s a lot of pressure but two things are working in Calzada’s favor. One is that Calzada performed really well in his first career start against New Mexico, throwing for 275 yards and three touchdowns.

Calzada, who was 18-of-38 against Colorado was 19-of-33 against Nex Mexico. But he didn’t turn the ball over and built some confidence.

Playing quarterback is all about confidence and in the past two weeks, Calzada has started and played well and also engineered a game-winning drive that covered 77 yards.

With running backs Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane each rolling on the ground, with more than six yards per attempt, Calzada doesn’t have to carry the load. He just needs to avoid mistakes and make a few more plays than KJ Jefferson.
