1. Mike Norvell will be fired at the end of the season

This always seems to be the go-to hot take when a traditional college football power is having a bad year, but it might be a possibility that FSU parts ways with Mike Norvell when the season comes to a close.

Will Backus of 24/7 Sports had this to say about Norvell following Florida State’s loss to Louisville:

"“Norvell replaced Willie Taggart, who was fired in 2019 after two years at the helm. In that span, Taggart led the Seminoles to a 9-12 overall record. He did not even make it to the end of the 2019 season, as the administration decided to move on from him following Florida State’s 4-5 start. In two years, Norvell, with three total wins, has failed to match Taggart’s win total from his first year as FSU’s coach. Sure, Norvell deserves some amnesty. It was impossible to foresee that Norvell’s first season as coach would be riddled by the COVID-19 pandemic, and three wins under those circumstances is admirable. But the fact is, this program looks significantly worse than it has in a long time.”"

It might seem a bit early to consider firing Norvell since he has only been in Tallahassee for two seasons, but we have seen several coaches make great progression in their second season as coach:

  • Kirby Smart year two at Georgia: 13-2, SEC Champion, Rose Bowl Champion, CFP National Championship appearance
  • Nick Saban year two at Alabama: 12-2, SEC Championship and Sugar Bowl appearance
  • Sam Pittman year two at Arkansas: 4-0, ranked in top 10 with wins over Texas and Texas A&M
  • Bobby Bowden year two at FSU: 10-2, Tangerine Bowl (now Citrus Bowl) win

Sometimes it does take a while for a coach to breakout and find success. The late great Coach Bowden waited 17 seasons to bring a national title to Seminole fans, but he did win a lot of games in between those years of waiting.

If they do part ways with Coach Norvell, who do they bring in? Do they try mending their broken relationship with former coach Jimbo Fisher? (not likely)

Could FSU be an attractive enough destination for Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, who has done a great job of building up the Cyclones? Or, do they make a bold move and call up arguably the greatest Seminole of all time Deion Sanders, who has had moderate success coaching at Jackson State?

Regardless of what happens to the Seminoles, they have to start improving and improving fast. Otherwise, there will be changes coming to Tallahassee.
