College Football: Ranking the 26 undefeated teams heading into Week 5
By Ryan Kay
There are 26 college football teams undefeated and not all of them being ranked nationally in the AP top 25 pool for Week 5 play. Here’s how they stack up
Out of the 26 undefeated teams, nine are not ranked nationally in the latest AP poll. Many of the undefeated teams are vying to win their fifth game of the season to remain undefeated and for some move up the AP poll or make their first appearance as a nationally top 25 ranked team. Now let’s examine and rank the 26 FBS teams based on various factors such as their victories against Power Five teams, their strength of schedule according to teamrankings.com, and how many wins have they had on the road.
The first five undefeated teams we will look at are all unranked but two of these five schools can move in the top 25 ranking with a win in week five play. Let’s take a look at the first five undefeated teams in these rankings.
South Alabama
Defeated: Southern Miss 31-7, at Bowling Green 22-19, and Alcorn State 28-21
Strength of Schedule: 126th
Road Victories: 1
Wins vs. Power 5 teams: 0

Strength of Schedule: 125th

Army

Strength of Schedule: 100th

Week 5 prediction: Army 31, Ball State 20
UTSA
Defeated: at Illinois 37-30, Lamar 54-0, and Middle Tennessee 27-13, at Memphis 31-28
Strength of Schedule: 76th
Road Victories: 2
Wins vs. Power 5 teams: 1
Ranked: No
Next opponent: UNLV
Week 5 prediction: UTSA 31, UNLV 24
SMU
Defeated: Abilene Christian 56-9, North Texas 35-12, and at Louisiana Tech 39-37, at TCU 42-34
Strength of Schedule: 77th
Road Victories: 2
Wins vs. Power 5 teams: 1
Ranked: No
Next opponent: USF
Week 5 prediction: SMU 41, USF 14
Of the five teams listed above, SMU and UTSA could sneak into the top 25 next week if they both win and some teams in the top 25 lose in week five play. Army is another team to look out for and if South Alabama and Wyoming would win then both would have pulled off upsets in week five play. All five teams have potential but they have little room for error moving forward. College football fans love cheering for teams under the radar that are playing and winning games with potentially less talent on their rosters than the teams that they are facing.
