Texas A&M football came into this season with national championship aspirations, but now are sitting at 0-2 in SEC play and have Alabama coming up this week. Things are not looking good for this team.
Of course, part of it is the fact that they are operating with a backup quarterback that has proven to be anything but competent when it comes to much of the game, but at some point, you have to look at other things.
First of all, the offensive line needs help. I understand that there are injuries that are keeping some guys off the field including the guy who was supposed to start at center, but point-blank this team has to be better across the offensive line if they expect to help anyone at the quarterback position — whether that continues to be Zach Calzada or not.
Calzada needs help and better play calling. When Jimbo Fisher calls plays, that is problematic. The running game is fine, though it would be better if the offensive line was better. I am not sure it’ll get much better when Haynes King comes back either honestly. Let’s remember that King threw three interceptions against the likes of Kent State in Week 1. Is Calzada the problem on offense? Is he just not getting enough protection? Who knows?
Defensively, the Ags didn’t make any adjustments. Mississippi State didn’t either and they didn’t have to because the Aggies didn’t. Things were depressing to watch for Texas A&M fans as they continuously only rushed three, even if that wasn’t working and they weren’t getting to the quarterback or stopping the quick passes for short gains.
Overall, the Aggies have a lot to do to get better before next week. At this point, they may as well not even show up to the Alabama matchup and just move on to Missouri the week after because it is not going to be a pretty matchup.
