We’re nearly halfway through the college football season, so it’s time to check in with some Group of Five teams who are better than their current records indicate.
We’ve got teams like Boise State football and Marshall football who make compelling cases that they’re actually better than their current records indicate.
Let’s take a look at the Group of Five teams who made the list.
5. Buffalo Bulls (2-3), Group of Five Conference: MAC
Buffalo football of the Mid-American Conference, currently sits at 2-3 entering Week 6 of college football. There’s a case to make that they’re markedly better than their current record.
The Bulls’ two wins this season came against Wagner and Old Dominion. Those two wins don’t matter too much here. What really gives an indication of how good Buffalo is, would be how they played in their three losses this season.
The team fell to Big Ten powerhouse Nebraska in Week 2, losing 28-3, but after that, the Bulls have been playing great football. They pushed then-ranked No. 16, Coastal Carolina, to the brink, losing 28-25 at home. It was Coastal Carolina’s smallest regular-season margin of victory since beat No. 13 BYU by just five points on Dec. 5, 2020.
This past week against Western Michigan, the Bulls had the lead entering the fourth quarter but were outscored 17-7 in the final stanza. Buffalo ultimately lost 24-17— a one-possession game.
Excluding the blowout loss to Nebraska— a game they were not expected to win— Buffalo has lost two games by a combined 10 points.
