4. Marshall Thundering Herd (2-3), Group of Five Conference: C-USA

Marshall football started off the season 2-0 with wins over Navy and North Carolina Central, outscoring those two opponents 93-17.

The Thundering Herd, however, have dropped three straight games since then. On paper, that sounds bad, but when you examine it more closely, you’ll see that Marshall was very competitive in those losses.

The Herd lost those three games by a combined 11 points! Marshall lost to East Carolina by four points, Appalachian State by one, and Middle Tennessee State by six. That’s tough to swallow when you know you’re right there within reach in those losses.

3. Fresno State Bulldogs (4-2), Group of Five Conference: Mountain West

Fresno State makes this list because they came this close to being 6-0 this season.

The Bulldogs watched a fourth-quarter lead evaporate at then-ranked No. 11 Oregon back in Week 2 of college football. Most recently, at Hawaii, an interception at the 2-yard-line with nine seconds left in the game sealed an upset victory for the Rainbow Warriors.

Fresno State has one of the best quarterbacks among all Group of Five teams in Jake Haener. The senior QB leads the country in total passing yards (2,230) and has the third-most touchdown passes in the country (18).

If one or two plays have a different outcome, Fresno State would be 6-0 and ranked fairly high in the AP Top-25 college football rankings.
