Notre Dame football fans are still holding out hope for the Irish to make a playoff push even after losing to Cincinnati at home a week ago.

The Irish are 4-1 on the year and dropped down to No. 14 in the AP Top 25 with the loss to the Bearcats. They’re still very much in the playoff race, however, as there are a handful of games left on the schedule that could count as resume builders with wins, and Virginia Tech is one of them.

Justin Fuente and his ever-burning hot seat will be hungry for a signature win over the Irish but Brian Kelly has a third playoff berth in four years on the mind.

Here’s why I believe Notre Dame gets the better of Virginia Tech in Week 6.

3. The Irish defense will suffocate Virginia Tech

Looking at the numbers, one would be led to believe that Notre Dame’s defense has taken a step back this season under Marcus Freeman. But that’s not the case.

The Irish have actually been really solid on defense this year outside of the Cincinnati game (against Desmon Ridder specifically) and the Florida State overtime win. Other than those two examples, the Irish have been really good defensively and Virginia Tech is going to find that out the hard way.

Braxton Burmeister isn’t exactly the most prolific passer and that Notre Dame secondary is going to bounce back against him and pick him off a couple of times. He hasn’t seen a defense quite like Notre Dame’s this year. And the Hokies don’t exactly run the ball especially well. That’ll continue.

Notre Dame’s defense is going to be really tough on Virginia Tech.
