Down eight points with under four minutes left in the fourth quarter, it looked like Notre Dame football was about to drop its second straight game.

Maybe the Cincinnati loss in Week 5 destroyed the Irish mentally. They looked defeated, but Jack Coan led them on a seven-play, 75-yard drive which was capped off with a short touchdown pass to Kevin Austin Jr. He would also catch the two-point conversion score to tie it up.

The Irish would make some stops and get the ball back and kick a game-winning field goal. This was a huge win for the Irish, improving to 5-1 on the year and very much in the playoff race.

Let’s take a look a look at some implications of Notre Dame’s Week 6 win.

3. Notre Dame’s defense keeps it in every game

As long as Marcus Freeman has this defense firing on all cylinders, the Irish are going to have a chance to win every game from here on out.

The defense held Virginia Tech to just over 300 total yards on its own field. Even more impressive was the fact that Braxton Burmeister averaged just 6.1 yards per attempt, didn’t throw a single touchdown pass, and completed just 50 percent of his passes. He had more success with his legs, leading Virginia Tech with 49 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Virginia Tech was held to just 3.6 yards per carry and that number was boosted by Burmeister’s 49 yards on 10 carries.

Notre Dame is going to have a chance to win each week with this defense and if the offense ever catches up, the Irish are going to be really tough to beat.
