The Knights will have all 135 space shuttle mission written on jersey numbers 0-9 and those numbers have been designed to mimic the Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System. You’ve probably seen the protection system in photos— it’s the black square titles seen on the underbelly of the space shuttle, which resists extreme temperatures upon entry and exit of the Earth’s atmosphere.

The collar of the UCF football jerseys is meant to mimic the black nose of the shuttle with the black-tipped wings rounding out the edges of the collar.

Additionally, the pants pay homage to the rectangular-shaped wings of the shuttled, according the the landing page announcing the jerseys.

The helmets will also pay homage to NASA, featuring a stripe on top of the helmet with the names of more than 100 “UCF alumni, faculty and fans who worked on the space shuttle program,” according to the announcement.

The helmet will also have a special memorial remembering the tragedies of space shuttles Colombia and Challenger and the lives lost on board.

The left shoulder will feature the American flag and the word “Discovery,” as an homage to Space Shuttle Discovery, which ferried UCF football alumnus Nicole Scott to the International Space Station in 2009.
