3. (19) BYU at Baylor

BYU is licking its wounds after taking its first loss of the season last Saturday. They’ll look to rebound on the road against Baylor. The two schools have not met on the gridiron in nearly 40 years, splitting a two game series in the 1983 and 1984 seasons. They will shortly become conference rivals when the Cougars join the Big 12.

BYU was undefeated entering the Boise State game last week. The Cougars were not beating the brakes off anybody, but they had some solid wins. The possibility of making enough noise and getting at least a New Year’s Six bowl was on the table. Then the turnover bug hit. The Cougars were a plus eight entering game but turned the ball over four times to the Broncos and did not get any in return.

The turnovers seemed uncharacteristic for the Cougars. Meanwhile Baylor is not turning over the ball themselves. Quarterback Gerry Bohanon has yet to throw an interception this season and the Bears have only lost four fumbles through six games. The Bear defense has taken the ball away 10 times.

The good news for the Cougars is quarterback Jaren Hall returned last week and threw for over 300 yards in their loss to the Broncos. But the offense will need to clean up their mistakes from a week ago. The Bears have a solid defense to cause turnovers and a good enough offense to make the Cougars pay if they are not careful.
