Iowa Football was upset at home by the Purdue Boilermakers at home this afternoon.

We should know better. Every college football fan and writer should know better. We should have learned from Alabama vs. Texas A&M and even Clemson vs. North Carolina State that any given Saturday anyone can lose.

However, the Hawkeyes came in as an 11-point favorite, and they were at home. There was no way Purdue would go to one of the most difficult places in the Big Ten and win, right? The college football gods told us to pay attention and we didn’t.

There were several factors that made this upset possible. First, Purdue’s defense has been solid all season. The Boilermakers have allowed 25 or more points only once. Despite Purdue not turning teams over that often, teams have not been able to consistently sustain drives against them all season.

Iowa football’s win against Penn State last season was physically and mentally taxing. The Hawkeyes were bound to have a letdown, especially with Purdue coming off of an off week.

Here are three takeaways from the game.
