After an impressive win over Texas, Oklahoma State football announced itself as a playoff contender and the most underrated team in college football.

Texas football fans have to feel a little bewildered. In back-to-back weeks, against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State football, two undefeated teams, the Longhorns had double-digit leads and couldn’t close the deal.

After falling behind 17-3 in the first half because of a pair of Bijan Robinson touchdowns, as well as getting down 24-13 in the third quarter, Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State football team proved it’s for real, as well as a playoff contender, by scoring the final 19 points and dominating down the stretch.

With the game on the line and down 11, Oklahoma State put together four scoring drives of more than 40 yards while the defense shut out a dangerous Texas offense over the last 1.5 quarters.

Spencer Sanders deserves a lot of credit and he was a cool customer down the stretch. On back-to-back scoring drives, he and the Cowboys converted three consecutive third downs to get within two.

Then, Jalen Warren took over (33 carries, 193 yards). He had four runs of more than 20 yards in the second half including a 29-yarder that set up a 10-yard run from Sanders that made it 32-24. From there, the defense sealed the deal and the Cowboys should find themselves making a healthy move up in the polls.

What win means for Oklahoma State football and Texas

For the Cowboys, it puts them in the driver’s seat to make the Big 12 championship game along with in-state rival Oklahoma. Of course, there is still a lot of work to do.

However, this is easily the most underrated team in the country and has strung together consecutive wins over Boise State, Kansas State, Baylor, and Texas.

Oklahoma State struggled early in the year against Missouri State and Tulsa, which has probably led to its low ranking in the polls but it’s time to get over that — this team is for real.

And if the Cowboys beat Iowa State next week on the road, they would have to suffer a massive collapse not to make the Big 12 title game, which would probably mean at least a berth in a NY6 bowl game.

As far as Texas is concerned, it’s a killer in the Big 12 race. And what’s even worse is that if the Horns had held on last week and again Saturday against Oklahoma State, not only would they be leading the Big 12, they would be back in playoff contention.

A one-loss Big 12 champion might not make the playoff but Texas, had it beaten Oklahoma twice, could have put together a pretty impressive resume.
