Texas A&M football came off a win over Alabama and followed it up with an overall dominating win over Missouri. What did we learn about the Aggies?
The Aggies were riding high off a big win over Alabama a week ago. They came into Missouri hoping to bring misery to Missouri and they did just that. Now, as they begin to prepare for South Carolina next week, we can discuss what we learned about the Aggies from this matchup.
3. The Aggies left a lot on the field.
Did putting up 35 on the road feel great? Sure, but they left a lot of points on the field from penalties and miscues. The Aggies missed two field goals, both from more than 40 yards out. That is six points right there.
Overall, it was just an average offensive performance in which you expected even more with how bad the defense is for Missouri. Was it dominating enough? Sure, they won by three touchdowns. But, it wasn’t what it could have been and that will have Texas A&M football fans wondering if Calzada is okay after that big hit against Alabama and if he is ready to go blow for blow against Ole Miss in a couple weeks.
2. Sloppy play can get you in trouble.
The Aggies have gotten sloppy the last couple of weeks in the third quarter. Last week, the sloppy play allowed Alabama to come back from a big lead and this week it allowed Missouri to put up a touchdown that they shouldn’t have gotten. This should have been a blow out of epic proportions as Missouri is not a good football team.
Winning by 21 is acceptable enough, but not for teams like Texas A&M football which is coming off an Orange Bowl winning season. The Aggies expect to be winning big games and the games they are supposed to win by quite a bit. Penalties and big plays allowed have to be cleaned up.
1. Achane and Spiller are still one of the best tandems in the country.
Yes, the numbers must be taken with a grain of salt due to playing one of the worst defensive units in the country, especially against the run. However, both Achane and Spiller showed up and showed out throughout this game. Spiller finished with 168 yards and a touchdown and Achane with 124 and two scores.
These two have been strong for the Aggies this year, even on games that the run game wasn’t going the best that it could have been- you could still expect that one of them would at least make one big play to keep the Aggies in the game.
They will likely lose Spiller after this year to the NFL, but Achane is a sophomore and will be ready to be a star in 2022. For now though, this tandem is ready to take on the remaining defenses on the schedule, which aren’t exactly the best so things are looking bright for them.
