4. UCLA Bruins

When you think of Chip Kelly’s offense, you think of quarterbacks like Darron Thomas, Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota and Jeremiah Masoli. Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been the signal-caller for Kelly while at UCLA.

All of those quarterbacks were dangerous with their legs. So, why would Spencer Rattler be a good fit for Chip Kelly’s offense in Westwood? The answer does not lie in Kelly’s collegiate coaching career but his pro coaching career.

Before Kelly’s career went belly up in the NFL, he led the Philadelphia Eagles to consecutive 10-win seasons with Nick Foles at quarterback. Foles is many things (for better or worse), but a runner is not one of them.

What made those teams successful? A great running game and offensive line. Rattler would do well (which is a recurring theme for Rattler) in an offense that Kelly ran while in the NFL. It is similar to what he ran while at Oregon and currently at UCLA.

The most significant difference is the quarterback running game. The Bruins have run the football well with Zach Charbonnet and Brittan Brown. The limiting factor for UCLA has been the quarterback and Thompson-Robinson’s inconsistent play. Rattler could fix that.
