Michigan football handled Northwestern by a score of 33-7 to take home the George Jewett trophy.

With a matchup against Michigan State looming, this game was looked at as a potential trap for the Wolverines. After the first half, that seemed to be an accurate description.

The first quarter was scoreless as both teams traded punts and missed opportunities on 3rd down. Blake Corum kicked off the scoring with a 5 yard rushing TD that was set up by an 11 yard gain by Corum on 3rd down on the previous play.

Through their first four drives, Northwestern had just one play that went for more than 10 yards. Evan Hull broke that trend with a monster 75 yard rushing touchdown right through the teeth of the Michigan football defense.

Unfortunately, this was the best Northwestern’s offense could muster, as Michigan football outscored the Wildcats 23-0 from this point on.  The Wolverines’ defense was able to force two turnovers in the 2nd half, and forced Northwestern to go 4/14 on 3rd down overall.

Once Michigan got the rushing attack in a groove, they could not be stopped. This was also helped in part by Northwestern’s defense that ranked last in the Big Ten in rushing yards allowed per game coming into today.

With a massive stretch of games on the way for Michigan, what did we learn today?
