Now that Virginia Tech football is at 3-4 with Justin Fuente, the Hokies’ head coach is sitting in one of the hottest seats in America.
Considering both their program’s history and the current lack of relevance within the ACC, one cannot deny that Virginia Tech should be doing much better right now.
The once-dominant football power has lacked impactful gameplay in recent years and, especially with their record being an unpleasant 3-4 at the moment, the masses have been looking for someone to blame. Well, not really.
The blame has fallen on Fuente, and that’s not exactly newsworthy; said blame has been on him for a little while now. And regardless of whether or not he truly deserves all of the hate that he is getting, it doesn’t change the fact that the outcry itself definitely has him in some boiling water.
With that in mind, all eyes will be on Virginia Tech this upcoming weekend, as they head into Atlanta to face Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech, too, is struggling so far this season, holding the same 3-4 record as Virginia Tech.
If the Hokies lose that game — which they just might, Bobby Dodd can be a tough place to play — could it be the last for Fuente? My answer is quite possibly.
Just for the sake of explaining the severity of such a loss: Virginia Tech, as a result, would tumble even further down the ladder of mediocrity, hitting 3-5 on the season (1-3 in the ACC). It would also be their third loss to a team without a winning record.
All of that, combined with their three wins being at home against a disappointing North Carolina, Middle Tennessee (Group of Five), and Richmond (FCS), shows that Virginia Tech is in no shape to possess even an ounce of relevance with where they stand today.
After yet another defeat at the hands of Georgia Tech (who I’m officially predicting will prevail) making them realize just how deep of a hole that they’re in, my guess is that they will see nothing to lose and finally give Fuente the boot. Following the parting of ways, they will then hope to put the 2021 season out of its misery while looking for a new face to lead the team back to greatness (assuming that they haven’t begun doing so already).
Some candidates for the vacancy should include head coaches Dave Clawson from Wake Forest and the soon-to-be-unemployed Ed Orgeron out of LSU, along with Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning.
Fuente being out the door has been feeling more and more like a matter of time as the weeks have gone by, and that is why if Virginia Tech falls to the Yellow Jackets this weekend, a change being made at head coach will most likely become the paramount priority.
