Michigan State Football’s Kenneth Walker takes control of Heisman race
We have been waiting for someone to assume control of the 2021 Heisman trophy race and Michigan State football’s Kenneth Walker III did that Saturday.
In a classic showdown between Michigan State football and the Michigan Wolverines, Kenneth Walker III put the Spartans on his back and scored five touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter to help Michigan State rally from 16 points down to win.
In a game with standouts all over the place — such as Aidan Hutchinson, Daxton Hill, Jayden Reed, and Payton Thorne — Walker was the biggest difference-maker and thrust himself to the top of the Heisman trophy conversation thanks to 195 yards and five touchdowns.
Kenneth Walker III should be the new Heisman Trophy favorite
Against the second-best defense in the country coming in, at least as far as scoring defense is concerned, Walker was dominant. He averaged 8.6 yards per attempt and ripped off a 58-yard run when the game was on the line.

That allowed the Spartans to tie the game after a two-point conversion and he eventually scored the game-winner in the fourth quarter as MSU held on for a 37-33 win.
The eighth-ranked Michigan State football team is now 8-0 on the season with games looming against Ohio State and Penn State. But there’s no doubt that the Spartans are College Football Playoff contenders, as well as viable threats to win the Big Ten East.
However, the biggest takeaway from Saturday, other than Michigan State football fans better hope Mel Tucker doesn’t leave for LSU, because he’s a darn-good coach, is that Walker isn’t just a Heisman contender — he’s the new favorite.
And if he can keep racking up yards and wins for the Spartans over the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions, he should be getting the award at the Downtown Athletic Club in December.
