For just the third time since 1999, Michigan and Michigan State played each other as undefeated teams.

Both squads have legitimate championship aspirations, as the path ahead is tough but clear as day. Win out in the round robin tournament that is the Big Ten East, and find yourself in a playoff contention heading into conference championship weekend.

Oh and by the way to these two teams have been going at it against each other since 1898.

The combination of a historic rivalry and championship implications led to a playoff atmosphere and a fantastic game in East Lansing.

After falling into a 10-0 hole, Kenneth Walker took over in the 2nd quarter and had two touchdowns that gave MSU a 14-13 lead.

Michigan responded with 17 unanswered points to take a two possession lead, but it did not seal the game as Michigan State’s fight never wavered. A resilient second half effort led by Walker, had this game tied up at 30 midway through the 4th quarter.

A crucial turning point came when Freshman QB J.J. McCarthy fumbled a snap midway through the 4th quarter. This turnover allowed Michigan State to march down the field again, and pull away with yet another Kenneth Walker touchdown.

The Wolverines did get two extra chances to take back control of this game but faltered with a miss on 4th down, and an interception that sealed Michigan’s fate.

With Paul Bunyan’s trophy staying put in East Lansing, what did we learn from these teams?
