The UTSA football team’s 2021 season is not a flash in the pan — the Roadrunners will be a Group of Five force for years to come
Texas-San Antonio has been one of the biggest success stories in all of college football this season and for good reason — the team is currently ranked No. 16 in the AP Top 25 college football rankings and is off to a historic 8-0 start.
Coming into this season, the Roadrunners had never been ranked at all, in any poll, ever. Now, they’ve enjoyed three consecutive weeks of not just being ranked, but improving in those rankings. They were initially ranked No. 24 after Week 7, No. 23 after Week 8 and now No. 16 after Week 9.
The San Antonio-based team has only had a football team since 2012 and has already made appearances in two bowl games. That kind of success in such a short amount of time is remarkable.
With just four games remaining this season, it’s not impossible to think that UTSA could finish the season undefeated and take an even bigger step forward.
Let’s take a look at some reasons why you should expect UTSA to continue their success for years to come.
No 1. The UTSA football team has buy-in from the San Antonio community
The Roadrunners are playing their best football in program history thanks to great players, great coaching and buy-in from a passionate and sports-hungry San Antonio community.
Many college football fans outside the state of Texas may not realize it, but San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the United States and home to the iconic Alamodome, to which the Roadrunners play their home games. And, with each passing week, attendance has been steadily growing, according to announced attendance information on game box scores:
- 16,202 vs MTSU (Week 3)
- 20,154 vs UNLV (Week 5)
- 27,515 vs Rice (Week 7)
A city known for its affinity for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs has slowly started to realize that something big is brewing in the Alamodome and they want to be a part of it.
With each win and another week of being ranked in the Top 25, fans will continue to deepen ties with this team, creating a fervent footprint in the heart of Texas.
