College Football Week 10: Michigan State, Oregon on upset alert
(16) Ole Miss: vs Liberty
Well, this is interesting.
Former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze makes his not-so-triumphant return to Oxford in College Football Week 10 for the first time since his resignation in the summer of 2017 after scandals that included but were not limited to, impermissible benefits, escorts, and a lawsuit.
And you thought Lane Kiffin’s return to Tennessee was fun.
On the field, Freeze brings a Liberty team that despite only being an FBS team for four years, has a 17-3 record over the prior two seasons. His only losses have been at NC State, at Syracuse, and somehow to ULM three weeks ago.
What makes the Flames so dangerous? That would be quarterback Malik Willis, who is one of the hottest NFL Draft prospects of the season. He’s been projected to go as high as https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2022-eagles-jets-steelers-broncos-bills-packers/15k9kyzavgg6b1cbj1lbqh7o54 first overall by Sporting News. The former Auburn transfer is having a better 2021 than 2020, completing 66.7% of his passes for 1986 yards with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. Against an Ole Miss defense that has given up its share of yards, Willis could be in line for a big game.
As key as Willis is through the air, don’t sleep on the Liberty rushing attack led by….you guessed it, Malik Willis. He has run for 648 yards and nine touchdown’s, both of which lead the team. Ole Miss’s rush defense gives up over 182 yards per game, while the Flames average over 185.
If Ole Miss zeroes in on stopping the pass, the run will torch them and vice versa.
The Liberty defense against the Rebels offense will be an interesting battle as well, Liberty gives up 300 yards per game while Ole Miss averages 531 yards per game, which is fourth in the entire country.
Two things you can expect in this game: rushing yards and points. This might be a game where whoever has the ball last gets the win.
